YTU, which has brought R&D studies to the forefront in its strategic plans for the last 12 years, displays the performance of an R&D university with its publications, projects and entrepreneurship studies. It stands out in the field of Clean Energy Technologies with its application and research centers, laboratory infrastructures, advanced technopark and national/international interaction and cooperation. In this context, competency analyses were conducted for the Clean Energy Technologies cluster, one of the areas prioritized by the Council of Higher Education, and workshops were held with the participation of YTU faculty members and public institutions and organizations. The decision to establish an institute was taken unanimously on this issue, which was discussed in detail in the YTU Senate. Support letters were received from many institutions and organizations regarding the establishment of the "Clean Energy Technologies Institute" at YTU.

As a result of the practices carried out by the university, the use of zero-emission vehicles on campus is also becoming widespread. There are many electric vehicles used by the technical teams of the university, and electric scooters and bicycles that can be easily reached at many points are available for everyone.

The annual international ranking of universities' sustainability performance is called Greenmetric. In this system, each university is awarded a score that reflects efforts to reduce its ecological footprint, and sustainability education and research.
