Developing a family disaster plan and learning about the safety of the structure we live in and the characteristics of the ground it stands on are fundamental steps toward reducing disaster risks. AFAD’s message this year, “Disaster preparedness begins at home,” reminds us that a culture of preparedness starts with the precautions we take in our daily lives.
As Yıldız Technical University, we emphasize the importance of scientific knowledge, engineering expertise, and interdisciplinary collaboration in reducing disaster risks. Our work in the fields of building safety, soil characteristics, urban planning, disaster management, and public awareness contributes to the creation of more resilient living spaces.
A culture of preparedness is also important in campus life. We invite our students and faculty to review their family disaster plans and familiarize themselves with emergency evacuation routes and assembly areas on our campuses.
On October 13, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we remind everyone that reducing disaster risks is possible through preparedness and shared responsibility; we emphasize the importance of working toward a safer, more resilient, and sustainable future through scientific knowledge.
